What is a Driver?

A driver is a program that is able to control a device that is connected to your computer. These drivers are used by the operating system to enable it to communicate with the particular device the driver was made for. Devices that you connect to your computer are often very specialized which makes it so Windows can not communicate directly with the device without a program telling it how to. This program, or device driver, acts as a translator between the installed device and the programs that utilize the device.

Why do I need to update?

By default Windows contains generic drivers for many different types of hardware connected to your computer. Unfortunately, many of these drivers that are bundled with Windows tend to be generic and do not support all of the advanced features of the hardware being installed. Therefore you would want to download and install the driver created by the hardware manufacturer so that Windows understands how to use these special features.

Also as time goes by, hardware manufacturers release new versions of their drivers to fix bugs, increase performance, increase stability on your computer, or add new features. When these drivers are released it is recommended that you upgrade your driver to take advantage of these new enhancements.

When new drivers are released they tend to come in two types of updates. The first type is a program that you run that will automatically update the driver for you and then prompt you to reboot your computer. The second type is a set of driver files that you need to manually update the drivers with. This tutorial will focus on teaching you how to upgrade your driver using both methods.

Finding Out the Manufacturer and Model of Your Device

Before we begin updating your driver, we need to know the manufacturer and model number for the device. This is a pretty simple problem to overcome. Simply look at your device for a brand name, and that should be the manufacturer. For example I am looking at my modem and on the top it says "Binatone". Pretty simple huh!

To find the “model” of your device look at the back/bottom of your device for a code (my modem's is ADSL 2000). If this does not work, try looking in the paperwork that came with your device and see if you can find it there.

On the other hand, if you have an internal device that is not easily accessible, it may be difficult for you to find the make and model for it (for example a video card). For internal devices you should use the Device Manager to find out this information:

Click on the Start button in the bottom right hand corner of your desktop as shown below:

Click on the Control Panel menu option to open the Control Pane as shown below:

Double-click on the System icon as shown below:

Click on the Hardware tab at the top of the box (red arrow), then click on the box which says Device Manager (blue arrow) as shown below:

A window will appear which contains a list of the devices on your computer like the image below.

You will need to click on the plus (+) arrow next to the hardware category for the driver you want to update (red arrow). For my continuing example of updating a video driver I would click on the plus (+) arrow next to display adapters (where video cards reside). After clicking on the (+) sign, the category will open listing the devices that are installed on your computer that fall under this category of hardware. You should see your video card listed and you would make a note of the make and model of the card you wish to update. Stay in the current window, as the following steps will continue from here.

Determining the current version of your driver

Before you upgrade your driver, you want to determine whether or not you have the latest version. When developers create drivers they assign a version number to it. Each time the manufacturer releases a new update to this driver, they increase the version number. In this way you can determine if you have the latest version of the driver by comparing the version number of your currently installed driver to the version number of the driver currently . So if there version number is higher than yours, you know that there is a newer version available for download.

To determine the current version of your driver you would do the following:

While in the device manager, as described above, you need to click on the (+) arrow next to the category of device you want to update (red arrow). Then right click on the device which you would like the update. Again, in my example I would right click on the Radeon 9500 pro / 9700 which the blue arrow is pointing at.

After right clicking a list of options will appear. Click properties:

A new windows will open, which will display the various properties of your device. Click on the Driver tab in the top of the window (red arrow). Then look at the details in the Driver Version line (blue arrow):

Write down this version number so you can reference it later.

Finding the latest driver

So, now that you know the name, model, and version number of your device it is time to determine if there is a newer driver available for you to use. The easiest way to find a updated driver is to check the manufacturer’s web site. This will ensure you have the latest and most up-to-date drivers available for your device. Finding your manufacturers web site should be pretty simple. Using the example above, I found my device manufacturer for my video card was ATI radeon. Usually the manufacturer’s web site is its name with standard internet tags around the end (www. and .com). If you are unable to find the website this way, try going to www.google.com and searching for the name there. Usually the first entry should be the official manufacturer’s site:

When you find the address of the manufacturer, go to the site and have a look around. It would be impossible to give instructions for each manufacturer, but you should be looking for a drivers page. On some manufacturer's sites the Drivers link is prominent. On others you generally need to go into their support section to find the updated drivers. If that does not work, you can search for it on the site. After taking a good look around the manufacturer’s site, you should have found the driver section for your device. However, in the event that you are unable to find a driver section, there are a number of handy sites which collect all the drivers available into an alphabetical list by manufacturer name. My favorite is www.driverzone.com. It has an up-to-date list of available drivers, and is very easy for novices to navigate around. This step is the only part of the tutorial where I cannot give you specific instructions; it varies too much from brand to brand.

If you have found the drivers page, simply compare the version number of the driver they have available for download to the version number you retrieved earlier. If their version number is higher, then they have an updated driver for your machine. If it is the same version, then there is no newer driver available.

Downloading the driver update

When you have found driver update for your device that is newer that the one you have installed, simply go back to the manufacturers site/or driverzone, and find the newer driver. Click on the download link to this file and you should be prompted with a download box. If you use Internet Explorer it will look like so:

You should save your driver update download to the desktop. This is so that the file can be easily found later on. To do this, click save and setting the Save In pathname as Desktop (red arrow) and press the Save button.

So now you should have the file placed neatly on your desktop for easy access.

If the files extension is .zip, then the driver will need to be extracted first. This can be done very easily using BleepingComputer's own tutorial on the subject here:

You should extract these files to the desktop now. If on the other hand, the file is an executable (ends with .exe), then move on to the next section.

Installing the Driver update

To launch the driver update program you would look for the program that you downloaded or extracted. The setup file should look something like this:

Double-click on the setup file and follow the on screen instructions to install the update. When the driver has finished installing, it will usually prompt you to reboot. Reboot your machine and you should now be using the updated drivers.

If on the other hand, there is no setup.exe file or other executable to run, then you will need to manually update the driver through the Device Manger. Using the previous instructions open the Device Manger. Using the drop down plus (+), open the category of the device you want to update and select the device by clicking on it once to highlight it. Right-click on the device and click Properties. Now click on the Driver tab and then click on the Update Driver button:

A wizard will begin in a new window. If the Wizard asks Can Windows connect to Windows Update to search for software? select the option labeled No, not this time and press the Next button. You will now see a screen similar to the one below.

Click on the option labeled Install from a list of specific location (Advanced) (red arrow). Then click next (blue arrow). A screen will open similar to the one below.

Select the option labeled Don't search. I will choose the driver to install. (red arrow) and press the Next button. A new screen may come up showing compatible hardware. Simply press the Have Disk button.

Then click on the Browse button and navigate to the folder on your desktop where you extracted the driver files. Once you are navigated to that folder you will see something like below.

You will see a list of .inf files that contain the information about the driver update found in that folder. Select the .inf file (red arrow) and press the Open button (blue arrow). Then press the OK button. You will now see a list of compatible hardware. Select the driver and press the Next button. Windows will copy the updated driver to your system. When it is done, press the Finish button.

You will now be back at the properties page for your device. If you look at the version, you should see that the version number now corresponds to the new driver you just installed. You can now press the Close button and exit the Device Manager.

Conclusion

After following the above instructions, you should be able to update your device drivers. This will be useful for meeting minimum requirements for applications/software, to fix bugs that out-of-date drivers may be causing, or to improve the performance of your hardware.

Introduction

Ever since Windows 95, the Windows operating system has been using a centralized hierarchical database to store system settings, hardware configurations, and user preferences. This database is called the Windows Registry or more commonly known as the Registry. When new hardware is installed in the computer, a user changes a settings such as their desktop background, or a new software is installed, this information is stored in the registry. The operating system then continually references this information during its operation. Though understanding the Registry will provide good knowledge into the inner workings of your computer, it is important to take extreme care when working with the Registry as modifying it incorrectly can cause problems with the use of your operating system.

The Registry

Overview

The registry is a key component of the Windows operating system. It is so important, that without it, Windows would not even run. When a new piece of hardware or software is installed in Windows, it stores its configuration into the Registry. This allows Windows to retrieve that information at later dates such as when it is starting up. As Windows starts it will read the configuration in the registry and know what drivers need to be loaded, what settings to be applied, and what resources need to be allocated in order for this equipment to work. Because this information is stored in the Registry on your hard drive, Windows has this information available each time it boots up.

The registry, though, is not only for operating system settings. User preferences and application settings are stored in the Registry as well. When you change your desktop background or screen saver, these details are stored in the Registry. Now when you shutdown Windows and start it up again at a later date, your preferences are available and loaded automatically. Application settings such as what directory you would like to download files to or what your default font is in a word processor are stored here as well. As you can see the Registry contains information that is not only vital to the use of the operating system, but also essential in allowing you to customize Windows to your particular tastes.

Structure of the Registry

The Registry is a hierarchical structure similar to what you see when looking at a directory/file tree on your computer. You have a main key, or Hive, with Keys, Subkeys and then Values. Each of these are discussed below:

Hives - Hives are the top most portions of the hierarchical data tree with each Hive containing a certain category of information. For example one Hive may contain the configuration that applies to the particular user logged on, while another Hive will contain information about the hardware installed in the computer. Depending on the version Windows that you are running there will be 5 or 6 different hives. Below we have outlined the 6 possible hives:

HKEY_CURRENT_USER (HKCU) -: This Hive contains the preferences and configuration for the particular user who is currently logged in. If a different user is logged onto the same machine, then the information in this Hive would change corresponding to that particular user's configuration.
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE (HKLM) -: This Hive contains the configuration for the actual computer. The information in this Hive remains the same regardless of the user currently logged on.
HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT (HKCR) -: This Hive contains the information for that pertains to the core user interface such as file associations and shortcuts.
HKEY_USERS (HKU) -: This Hive contains the user information for all the users that have ever logged onto this computer.
HKEY_CURRENT_CONFIG (HKCC) -: This Hive contains the information about current hardware configuration. This Hive is linked to the HKLM Hive.
HKEY_DYN_DATA (HKDD) -: This Hive is found only on Windows 95/98/ME. It contains information about hardware Plug and Play. This Hive is linked to the HKLM Hive.

Keys - Keys are an organizational unit in the Registry. Keys are containers that can either contain values or further subkeys. Subkeys themselves, can contain further subkeys. Keys are similar to folders in that they can contain further subkeys or the file, or what we call values in the Registry.

Values - Values contain the actual data that is being stored in a Key or a Subkey. There are quite a few different types of values that can be stored in the Registry, but the most common that you will see are binary, strings, and DWORD values.

When visualizing the Registry you should look at the Hives, Keys, and Subkeys as the path that you will need to navigate in order to reach the final stored information which is the Value.

An example Registry key can be seen below. This Registry key controls what your initial start page will be when using Internet Explorer.

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main\\Start Page

When we break this Key down to its components we can see the following:

HKEY_CURRENT_USER is the Hive that this key is associated with.
Software is a Key
Microsoft - This is a Subkey
Internet Explorer - This is a Subkey
Main - This is a Subkey
Start Page - This is the Value that the actual data is stored in. For this particular Value, the data will be the start page that you want Internet Explorer to use.

Where the Registry is stored

The Registry itself is stored on your computer in certain files. Below we detail what files and their locations are used to store the Registry based upon the particular version of Windows.

For Windows NT 4.0, Windows 2000, Windows XP, and Windows Server 2003, the Registry files are stored in the following directories:

Systemroot\System32\Config
Systemroot\Profiles\Username

The names for the registry files are:

Sam, Sam.log, Sam.sav
Security, Security.log, Security.sav
Software, Software.log, Software.sav
System, System.alt, System.log, System.sav
System, System.alt, System.log, System.sav, Ntuser.dat, Ntuser.dat.log
Default, Default.log, Default.sav

For Windows 98, the registry files are named User.dat and System.dat and are stored in the C:\Windows directory.

For Windows Millennium Edition, the registry files are named Classes.dat, User.dat, and System.dat and are stored in the C:\Windows directory.

How to edit the Registry

In order to modify values in the Registry you need to use a program called a Registry Editor. Windows comes with a program called regedit.exe or otherwise known as Registry Editor. To launch this program you should click on the Start button, then click on the Run option, and in the field type regedit.exe and press the OK button. This will launch the Registry Editor.

When you open Registry Editor you will see two panes. The left pane is your navigation pane. By default it will list all the Hives with a + or - next to each one. You can click the + to expand the tree underneath that Hive revealing Keys and Subkeys. You would keep navigating the Subkeys until you reach the desired location and then click on it once to highlight it. Then you will see in the right pane a listing of the values associated with that key.

In the screenshow below you will see an image of the Registry Editor where I have navigated to the key:

In Figure 1 above, the Hive that we are in is HKEY_CURRENT_USER. They Key is Control Panel and the Subkey is Colors. The right hand portion shows all the Values contained in the subkey Colors.

To modify a Value, you would double-click on the value name and a screen similar to Figure 2 below would appear.

You then would type in the appropriate information into the Value data field and press the OK button.

To delete values, instead of double-clicking on a value name you would right-click on the value and then select Delete. This method can also be used to delete keys or subkeys. To add a value you click on the Edit menu option and then select New and pick the appropriate type.

It is also possible to export and import Registry values into your Registry. To export a particular Key or Subkey you would click once on the key you would like to export and then click on File and then Export. Then select a directory and filename to export the Registry key to. Likewise, you can also Import keys into the Registry by clicking on Import and then selecting the file that you had exported previously.

Backing up the Registry

Viruses, Spyware, and other Malware can cause corruption and damage to the Registry. With this in mind, it is important to backup your registry so that you know you have a clean copy stored safely on your hard drive in case of an emergency. Below we have outlined the steps to backup and restore your Registry under the various versions of Windows.

Backing Up the Windows 95 Registry

Reboot your computer and when you see "Starting Windows 95" press the F8 key. Then choose Safe Mode Command Prompt Only from the startup menu and press enter.
At the command prompt type the following lines, pressing ENTER on your keyboard after each line:
cd \windows
attrib -r -h -s system.dat
attrib -r -h -s user.dat
copy system.dat *.bak
copy user.dat *.bak

WARNING: These steps make the assumption that you do not have any files named system.bak or user.bak. If you do have files with these names, change the extension in the steps above to something else.
Restart your computer.

Restoring the Windows 95 Registry

Reboot your computer and when you see "Starting Windows 95" press the F8 key. Then choose Safe Mode Command Prompt Only from the startup menu and press enter.
At the command prompt type the following lines, pressing ENTER on your keyboard after each line:

cd windows
attrib -r -h -s system.dat
attrib -r -h -s system.da0
attrib -r -h -s user.dat
attrib -r -h -s user.da0
ren system.dat system.daa
ren system.da0 system.da1
ren user.dat user.daa
ren user.da0 user.da1
copy system.bak system.dat
copy user.bak user.dat

WARNING : This will restore the previous backup that you had made. If you had chosen an extension other than .bak when you had backed up the Registry previously, then substitute that extension above.
Restart your computer.

Backing Up the Windows 98/ME Registry

Click the Start button, then click Run.
Type scanregw in the field and press the OK button.
When the program has finished scanning the Registry for errors it will ask if you would like to back up the Registry.
Click the Yes prompt and the program will create the backup.
When it is completed, press the OK button.

Restoring the Windows 98/ME Registry

For Win98, reboot your computer and press and hold the CTRL button. Then choose Safe Mode Command Prompt Only from the startup menu and press enter. For Windows ME, start your computer with a startup disk and select Start Computer without CD-ROM Support.
You will now be at a command prompt. Type c:\windows\command\scanreg /restore and press enter on your keyboard. A screen will will appear with a list of the previous Registry backups sorted by date. Using the arrow keys, select the Registry backup you would like to restore and press enter. A known previously working Registry backup will have the word Started next to the date.
Scanreg will now restore the Registry and check it for errors. When it is done you will receive confirmation and you should now press enter to reboot your computer. If you had booted your computer with a floppy, please remove the floppy first before rebooting.

Backing Up the Windows XP/2000/2003 Registry

Click on Start, then All Programs, then Accessories, then System Tools, and then click on Backup. If you do not see the Backup utility you will need to install it using your XP or 2003 CD.
When the program launches, if you are not in the wizard, select the Backup Wizard Option.
When the Wizard opens press the Next button.
Select "Only back up the System State Data". Keep pressing next until you see Finish.
Press the Finish button to start the Registry backup.
When it is completed you will see a report of the backup. You can then press the Close button and then exit the program.

Restoring the Windows XP/2000/2003 Registry

Option 1:

Click on Start, then All Programs, then Accessories, then System Tools, and then click on Backup. If you do not see the Backup utility you will need to install it using your XP or 2003 CD.

When prompted enter your administrator password and press enter on your keyboard.
When you get the prompt, type cd repair to enter the directory where a Registry backups is stored.
Type the following lines, pressing enter on your keyboard after each line:

copy default c:\windows\system32\config
copy sam c:\windows\system32\config
copy security c:\windows\system32\config
copy software c:\windows\system32\config
copy system c:\windows\system32\config

NOTE: If it prompts you to overwrite the existing files, select Y for yes.
When you are finished, type exit and press enter.
Remove your Windows CD and reboot.

Let's face it - the Windows Vista shutdown dialog is one of the worst pieces of UI nonsense ever. Just look at it… what were they thinking with that popup dialog?

What you might not realize is that you don't have to use the mouse to access the functions on that ridiculous menu. Let's start by first hitting the Windows key to pop up the start menu.

Now use the right arrow key, and you'll see that the Sleep button is highlighted. If you hit enter, your computer will immediately enter sleep mode. That's only 3 keystrokes… not too bad.

If you use the right arrow key 3 times, the menu will pop up, and then you can either use the up/down arrow keys, or you can use the quick access key on the menu to choose the item you want. Notice how the current menu item is highlighted.

So here's the list of shortcut combos for your enjoyment:

Win + Right Arrow + Enter	Sleep Mode
Win + Right Arrow (x3) + Enter	Shut Down
Win + Right Arrow (x3) + U	Shut Down
Win + Right Arrow (x3) + R	Restart

Search for Install Packages from the Ubuntu Command Line

When you are trying to install software on Ubuntu or Debian linux using the apt-get package system, quite often you'll forget the exact name of the package you are trying to install. Here's how you can get a little help figuring out what the name is.

Syntax:

apt-cache search SearchTerm

Example:

> apt-cache search monodevelop

How to Delete, Modify or Disable an Incorrect or Duplicate Entry on the XP Boot Menu

Have you ever inherited a computer that has more than one entry on the Windows XP boot menu screen? Most of the time one of the entries doesn't even work in the first place, and then you're forced to either hit a key or wait 30 seconds every time.

There are two options to get around this: You can remove the offending boot menu item, or you can just turn off the boot menu from being displayed. If you aren't tech savvy, you'll want to just use the second option.

Thanks to my friend Shawn for forgetting how to do this and prompting me to write this article. =)

Removing an Incorrect Boot Menu Option on XP

Note: This method involves modifying a very important boot configuration file. You should proceed with caution and always make sure you have backups of your files just in case something goes wrong.

All of the boot menu options in Windows XP are stored in the boot.ini file in the root of your boot drive, usually the C: drive. You'll need to first set the file to be writeable by using the attrib command from the command prompt:

attrib -r boot.ini

Now you can open up the boot.ini file in Notepad by going to Start \ Run and typing in the following:

notepad c:\boot.ini

In this file you'll see the same options that you normally see in the boot menu. Take special note of the default= item, as that should be pointing to one of the items in the list (normally the top one).

Tip: Everything after the "=" character in the default line should match everything before the "=" character in the [operating systems] section. Remember this when making edits.

If you want to remove the second item in the list, and the first one is set to the default, you can just delete that line from the file: (you should really backup the boot.ini file before you make any changes)
If the problem is that the first line is set to default, but the second line is the one that works, you'll want to remove the offending line from the [operating systems] section, and then MODIFY the DEFAULT= line to match the correct one. In this example, I set the partition to (2) instead of (1) in the default line.

Again, you should be very careful when manually editing this file.

Disable the Boot Menu the Easy Way

Instead of risking screwing something up by manually editing the file, you can just disable the boot menu entirely, which is much safer. There's no reason to show the menu if you only make one choice, and not really any good reason to edit the file manually.

You can either right-click on My Computer and choose Properties, or type sysdm.cpl into the Start \ Run box to bring up the System Properties window. Once there, go to Advanced \ Startup and Recovery \ Settings as shown below:

In the Startup and Recovery dialog, make sure the default operating system is correct, and then uncheck the option for "Time to display list of operating systems", and close the dialog.

At this point you should be able to reboot, and the menu should be gone.

Extra Credit: You'll notice the Edit button in this dialog… this opens up boot.ini in Notepad, just like in the first method above.

Speed up Your Windows Vista Computer with ReadyBoost

Windows Vista includes a new feature called ReadyBoost that lets you plug in a flash memory stick or SD card to store commonly used files for quicker access than off the hard drive.

Turning this feature on couldn't be simpler. Just stick the flash drive, SD card, or whatever flash device you want into your computer. You'll see this dialog pop up:

Click the "Speed up my system" link, and you'll be taken to the ReadyBoost panel for the flash drive:

Just select Use this device, and set the amount of space you want to use. Windows will create what is essentially a paging file on the disk, and will use it for faster access.

Note that this will only work with USB 2.0 devices or SD cards.

Discovering new features and functions (so that's how you adjust the steering wheel!) helps to shorten the acclimatization period, letting you turn a mass-market product into one customized for you. Do you prefer bigger, better-looking icons? Is increased security worth a few extra clicks, in your eyes? Would you like to link all your gadgets to the new system the right way—the first time? Then we've got the guide for you. We'll walk you through Vista's many neat features and more than 50 tips on installing Vista optimally, configuring it for you and your family, improving system speed, and turning up its coolness. When we're through, you'll have made the new OS uniquely yours.

1. Command Authority
Like a scene straight out of Kramer vs. Kramer or Mad Magazine's Spy vs. Spy, Vista has two types of administrators. What gives? First, understand that there are two kinds of user accounts, Administrator and Standard. This refers to the level of privileges—the things you're allowed to do. In addition, and separately, there is an account named Administrator. It's typically used to sort out problems that keep you from logging on to your normal account. As in Windows XP, you should rename the Administrator account for security purposes (just don't forget what you've changed it to). Right-click Computer and click Manage. Under Local Users and Groups, open Users, right-click the one named Administrator, and choose Rename. Then right-click it and choose Properties to delete its telltale description as well.

2. Improve Your Network
There are two types of wireless networks known to Vista: public and private. Public networks are less secure, so the OS disables discovery of other devices when connected to one. But by default, Vista makes your network public. Go private instead, enabling a much more comprehensive view of the network behind your router using a new protocol called Link Layer Topology Discovery. In the Network and Sharing Center, click Customize under the picture of your network at top. Switch to Private and click Next. While you're optimizing things, note the various sharing options listed; it's easy to give all of your PCs access to your printer here.

3. Truly Secure Your Files
Password-protecting your laptop is good overall security, but for added protection, start encrypting. Vista Enterprise and Ultimate editions come with BitLocker Drive Encryption, a tool that relies on a Trusted Platform Module to secure access—check your manual to see if your notebook has one and update your BIOS if needed. To make the magic happen, you'll need an extra partition on your hard drive that you can create with the Vista partitioning tool on your installation disc or with the BitLocker Drive Preparation Tool, a Vista Ultimate Extra. You'll create one small partition for essential OS files, and the rest of the drive will hold encrypted files. Format the partition as NTFS, not FAT32.

4. Run Two Operating Systems
Apple's Boot Camp software lets you run the Microsoft Windows XP operating system on an Intel-based Macintosh, but it doesn't support Vista—and it's still in beta, almost a year after its release. To run Microsoft's newest OS on your Apple, get Parallels Desktop for Mac. This virtualization software lets you run two operating systems simultaneously by taking advantage of the Intel Core Duo's built-in virtualization technology. To get Vista running smoothly in a window on your OS X desktop, be sure to boost the program's memory requirements to 2GB; Vista won't run well with only 1GB of memory for the subsystem.

5. Beautify Your Boot
The boot screen built into Windows is functionally useless. Why not make it look prettier? Microsoft designed a built-in boot screen that replaces the animated start-up bar (you'll see it if you awaken your PC from hibernation); it provides just as little information, but it looks a whole lot better. To enable it, run MSConfig from the Start menu, and under the Boot tab, select No GUI Boot.

6. Be a Mobile Power User
Windows Mobile devices are handy, but are crippled off the bat. The new operating system comes with a Sync Center that lets you sync only media files, not your PIM info. Before plugging your device in for the first time, go to the Download Center at Microsoft.com and search the Mobile Devices category for the Windows Mobile Device Center, which powers up support for syncing e-mail, calendar data, and contact info. Once you've used the Device Center to transfer your calendar to your handheld, right-click it in My Computer to see the gadget's charge state, and you'll always be fully powered.

7. Find Your Router
To add encryption to your network, boost the speed, control access, and manipulate your bits in other ways, you'll probably need to log on to your wireless router, often via a built-in Web page served from the device. This Web page is usually given a difficult-to-remember IP address, such as 192.168.2.1. Find your router's home page easily via the Network and Sharing Center; first click View full map at top right, then right-click your router or wireless access device and select Go to Device Home Page.

8. Enable Concurrent Sessions
Server versions of Windows let multiple users log on to a PC simultaneously; this is handy for home-theater enthusiasts who want to perform remote maintenance on a system that others might be using to watch TV, for example. To get this working under Vista Business or Ultimate editions, you'll need to replace the Termsrv.dll file with a hacked version. You can find the complete instructions and a link to the new DLL at the Missing Remote Web site, www.missingremote.com.

9. Be The Boss
In order to limit the havoc that rogue programs can cause, administrator accounts aren't totally in charge. To gain complete control (to install antispyware, for example), log on as the Administrator—but not all the time, or you'll negate this account's raison d'être. The Administrator account won't show up in the User Accounts control panel, however: It's disabled by default. In Vista Ultimate or Business editions, right-click it in the Management Console (as described in the first tip) and select Properties. Uncheck Account is disabled and it'll show up in the control panel. That's the super-mega-ultimate account. Don't have Ultimate? Click Start, type cmd, right-click the cmd.exe item at top, and choose Run as administrator. Type net user administrator /active:yes and log off. The Administrator account now shows up on the welcome screen.

10. Install From an Upgrade Disc
Past Windows versions have let you prove upgrade-readiness by inserting a CD of the previous OS during the install process. Vista doesn't; Microsoft specifically says "Windows Vista does not check upgrade compliance. Therefore, you cannot use an upgrade disc to perform a clean installation of Windows Vista." To work around this problem, insert your CD into your clean computer. Don't enter the code when Vista asks for your license key, simply click Next. You'll create a system sans activation code that's active for 30 days. Then reboot from the CD; you'll be able to install the OS as an update to your Vista installation. Now use the activation code.

11. Save Your Music!
We've all been buying audio and video files wrapped in DRMs from Microsoft, Apple, and others. What happens to that content when you upgrade to Vista? If you've bought digital media from stores running Windows Media Player 10, you'll be asked to reauthorize the content. With stuff from Apple's iTunes, deauthorize your PC before upgrading to Vista. Simply sign in to the iTunes store, and, from the Store menu, select Deauthorize Computer. After upgrading, reverse the process to re-enable access to your files. If you've authorized the maximum five PCs, select View My Account from that same menu, where you can "Clear all authorizations" once a year.

12. Extend Activation
Are you testing out Vista's features and compatibility but not sure if you want to go ahead and activate it? Microsoft understands. It has built a software licensing manager into the new OS that lets you extend the activation period. At the Start menu's search bar, simply type slmgr -rearm to get another 30 days. You can do this a maximum of three times before Microsoft blocks further extension periods. And once you're locked out, that's it.

13. Prevent Vertigo on Vista
The new 3D desktop is a tremendous improvement, but not all of the features are handy, and some of the settings are downright disconcerting. Control your own 3D experience! First, right-click Computer and choose Properties to get the System Properties page. Click Advanced system settings. On the Advanced tab, click Settings in the Performance section. The Visual Effects field is where you can choose to Adjust for best appearance, Adjust for best performance, Let Windows choose, or go wild with your own choices.

14. Snip at Will
Power users are comfortable using the PrintScr key to capture screen shots, but there's a better way in Vista. You can use the integrated Snipping Tool to capture any object on your screen and then annotate, save, or share the image. Simply use the mouse to capture free-form shapes, rectangles, whole windows, or full screens. After you capture a snip, it's automatically copied to the markup window, where you can annotate, save, or share it. Bonus: If you've clipped from an Internet Explorer window (not Firefox or Opera) and save the snip as an HTML file, the URL is automatically appended to your image. Neat!

15. Play Six Degrees of Kevin Bacon
Love him or hate him, Kevin Bacon is a name you'll never forget. Now you can play "find the actor" anytime (not officially, that is, but bear with us) using Windows Vista. First, launch Windows Media Center from the Start menu. Navigate to TV Movies and select Recorded TV. Select the movie you are interested in (Vista comes with snippets from Apollo 13 and Vertigo, just to get you started). Select Cast More, pick a cast member, and repeat until you find Mr. Bacon.

16. Work With The SideShow
Vista supports a secondary display (ideally on your laptop's lid, as on the cool Asus W5FE) for you to get quick access to e-mail, photos, calendar info, and music files. And that's just scratching the surface. SideShow info can be stored and accessed in two ways: either from the hard drive, which takes longer and involves caching, or directly from a flash component in your system—quicker, but space is limited. The flash component shows up as a separate drive in Windows Vista that you can drag and drop MP3s and photos to. Some gadgets require use of the hard drive; you won't be able to access them if the system is off. Instead, put it to sleep, and set Vista to wake every 5 minutes, updating e-mail, calendar, and other gadgets that rely on an Internet connection.

17. Pick Your Feeds
The Sidebar's RSS Feed Reader is handy, but by default it picks up feeds only directly from Microsoft. Making it work for you is a two-stage process. First, find a Web page with an RSS feed on it using Internet Explorer—the orange feed icon at the right of the status bar lights up to indicate the feed's presence. Click it, and select Subscribe to this feed. Then right-click on the module and select Options; you'll be able to choose which feeds and how many items are displayed. 18. Be a Better Parent
Kids need structure, otherwise they'll spend hours browsing the Web for dirty limericks. Turn to Vista's parental controls for a quick and easy way to monitor how long they're online—and who goes where. First, create an account for each child in the User Accounts control panel. Then click Set Up Parental Controls to create and set limits. Don't forget to enable activity monitoring as well. It's okay—you're Dad, not Big Brother. You can view them later by visiting the same section of the control panel. But be forewarned: Parental controls are available only to PCs on a workgroup, not those on a domain.

19. Reduce Power Consumption
As laptops became more popular, consumers became aware of Win XP's power settings. Standby left your computer running at low power; hibernate saved all memory to disk and then shut down your system—but often balked at problem programs. With Vista, Microsoft redrew the rules, adding an "away mode" and defaulting to "sleep" rather than off. Sleep mode starts off like standby but saves memory like hibernate. Then after 15 minutes it just shuts off, with no back talk from programs. Nicely done, Microsoft! To shut down completely, skip the Start menu's orange power button in favor of the right arrow next to it.

20. Get help
The Help and Support Center built into Windows XP was a good start but far from ideal. Though it appears similar to Win XP's, Vista's Support Center is much improved. Besides the usual documentation on core OS functionality, Vista's integrated system can get the latest help info from the Web, allow a friend to help by remote assistance, or search in "Windows communities." Type a word or phrase into the main search field and hit enter. At the bottom of your returned results is a useful link to these other sources of assistance.

21. Boost Your System Speed
Hybrid hard drives, which embed a cache of flash memory inside a hard drive's 3.5-inch shell to improve its performance, aren't on the market yet. But they're just one way Vista uses flash memory; ordinary thumb drives can, cheaply and easily, let your PC read small, random bits of frequently accessed data, a Vista feature called ReadyBoost. Here's the thing: To maximize its efficiency, a ReadyBoost thumb drive should have the same amount of memory as is built into your system. In other words, match your 2GB of RAM with a 2GB flash drive for best performance.

22. Uncover Send To
The Send To menu is a handy way to quickly move files into frequently accessed locations. The default locations are Microsoft's favorites, however, and they might not be yours. In Windows XP it was possible to add to the Send To menu by putting a shortcut in the SendTo folder. But try that trick with the SendTo folder in your Personal folder and you'll be hit with an "access denied" message. That's because it's just a pointer to the real one, which you will find at C:\Users\username\AppData\Roaming\Microsoft\Windows\SendTo. You can add shortcuts to that one.

23. Launch Apps Faster
When you place items in the Quick Launch bar (the little icon bar next to the Start button), Windows Vista automatically assigns shortcut key combinations to them—well, it assigns keys to the first ten, anyway. Just hit the Windows key plus a number key corresponding to the icon's position in the bar. For instance, to launch the third application in the Quick Launch bar, press Windows-3. Don't see the bar? Right-click an empty part of the Taskbar and select it under the Toolbars menu.

24. Add 3D Sound
If you're having trouble getting full 3D sound in Windows XP games from your SoundBlaster sound card, use Creative's ALchemy tool. Windows Vista uses an audio API called OpenAL for its game audio, and some DirectSound games won't use anything beyond two stereo speakers, ignoring EAX and other APIs. Download the Creative ALchemy beta from preview.creativelabs.com/alchemy, install it, and run it. The ALchemy tool will cause Windows XP games that lack OpenAL support to pipe their DirectSound calls through OpenAL, giving you full 3D audio support.

25. Restore Your Menus
Vista's own windows and many new applications lack the familiar File, Edit, and View menus. But we've gotten used to them after all these years! You can enable them through each application—if they're included at all. To turn them on in Vista proper, open any window (such as Computer, or Documents), click Organize, and click Folder and Search Options. Select the View tab and fill in the check box next to Always Show Menus. Click Apply and then OK. Alternatively, to show the menus temporarily, just hit the Alt key with any given window in the foreground.

26. Eliminate That Warning
Windows Vista hates it when you don't use an antivirus program, a firewall, or some other security feature. But if you don't need one part of the built-in security, you also don't need the Security Center shield icon to pop up constantly in the system tray. Right-click the icon and click Open Security Center. Then, in Security Center, click Change the Way Security Center Alerts Me. You want to select Don't Notify Me and Don't Display the Icon (even though Windows tells you it's "Not Recommended").

27. Add Photos Faster
Most digital cameras come with proprietary software for importing pictures into Windows and cleaning off the camera's memory card, generally a two-stage process. You can do it all in one step with Windows Photo Gallery, which has an auto-erase feature. It lets you dump photos and erase your camera's memory card with one click, preserving a bit of battery life and simplifying yours. Select Options from the File menu, and under the Import tab, select Always erase from camera after importing. Good? Maybe. Potentially dangerous? Definitely. Proceed with caution.

28. Get The Power Prompt
The Command Prompt, though buried in the Start menu, is an enduringly versatile application. Too bad it's hampered by User Account Control, which will prevent certain apps from running properly because of a lack of permissions. To upgrade its capabilities, navigate to the Accessories folder in the Start menu, right-click on Command Prompt, and select Run as Administrator. If you find yourself doing this frequently, try this shortcut: The search box in Vista's Start menu can serve the same function. Simply enter a command, hold the Shift and Ctrl keys, and press Enter.

29. Be An Icon Artist
You may have noticed that by simply holding down the Ctrl key you can use your mouse's scroll wheel to resize a folder's icon. But you may not have noticed that this works on the desktop itself. You can resize from standard 48-by-48-pixel icons to full 256-by-256 photo quality renditions. Power users: Go to Computer and click the arrow to the right of the View menu, where you'll find a slider with an endless selection of icon sizes.

30. Know Your Velocity
Everyone knows about the Windows Experience score, but a power user won't find the information there as comprehensive or useful as one could wish. Skip it in favor of Microsoft's Management Console. Right-click on Computer and select Manage. Then select Reliability and Performance and take a look at your system's Reliability Monitor in the collection of monitoring tools. This system stability index gives a weighted value of how stable your PC is based on data collected over its lifetime. Little red X's show where specific failures occurred. It's a great troubleshooting tool.

31. Create an XPS Document
XPS (which stands for XML Paper Specification) can be very useful; it's effectively an open-standard version of the popular-but proprietary Adobe Acrobat format. What does it all mean? You can create, edit, print, and save the documents without paying Adobe for a license. To create an XPS document, create a file in any word processor (Notepad, WordPad, Word, and so on) and click Print . . . . Then select the automatically installed XPS Printer to "print" the document to an XPS file.

32. Sync Everything!
Need to sync to something that's not supported? Say, to a digital camera, across folders, or even between different computers? SyncToy 1.4, a PowerToy from Microsoft, now supports Windows Vista and will let you sync a folder to a removable hard drive, a network share, and other things. You can pick up the tool for free from Microsoft's Download Center.

33. Set Affinity
Multitasking is an efficient way to spread resources across multiple CPUs—or the multiple cores of a dual-core CPU (or quad-, or octo-, or whatever!). But if you have a single application that consumes a large amount of the system's resources, such as Norton AntiVirus, bypass the multitasking and set it to run exclusively off a single core, potentially improving its efficiency. Bring up the Task Manager, find the resource-hogging process (for Norton, it's called nprotect.exe), right-click it, and select Set Affinity. Then deselect one of the cores, isolating the process and boosting its efficiency.

34. Move Your Stuff
Personal folders are handy, but they may not live where you want them to. Fortunately, you can relocate your own folders fairly easily. Click your username at the top right of the Start menu to open your profile. Right-click Documents and choose Properties. Then click Location | Move and select the new location, or even create it at this time. You'll be asked if you want to move your documents; hit Yes, of course. Don't try this with the Public folder, though: There's a Location tab, but no Move button.

35. Know your Autoplay
XP's Autoplay functionality was merely a thing the OS did, but Vista makes it useful with a control panel applet (including Blu-ray and HD DVD support!). Type Programs in the Start menu and hit Enter and you've got complete control.

36. Create zipped files (again)
Vista opens password-protected ZIP files, but it no longer creates them (Microsoft says passwords don't afford serious security). Your best bet: Download SecureZIP. It's a stable—and free!—alternative.

37. Restore your files
In XP, System Restore fixes OS problems but won't do squat if you accidentally save a file rather than quitting. In Vista, it creates "shadow copies" of your files daily; just right-click a Word, Notepad, or Wordpad file to roll it back to earlier versions.

38. Improve Windows Sidebar
Though the Sidebar is handy, an overcrowded Sidebar merely adds desktop clutter. For gadgets that don't provide "glanceable" data, right-click the gadget and set opacity to 40 percent. It'll fade out when not in use.

39. Go International
Need to know the time in Lima? Or Monaco? Searching for time zones in the control panel will reveal an option to add clocks for different time zones.

40. Gain Speed
Does Vista seem slower than XP to you? A default power setting in the "Power Saver" plan limits the CPU to 50 percent. Open the Power Options control panel and change it to "High Performance" to give it full throttle.

41. Search Elsewhere
Internet Explorer's default search engine is MSN.com. Boo! Click the drop-down menu next to IE's magnifying-glass icon and select "Find More Providers…" Adding Amazon, eBay, and MTV make searching much more fun.

42. Launch Apps Faster
Want to find that program? Don't search through all those menus on the Start button, just type the first couple of characters into the bar at the bottom and the name will appear.

43. Keep Personal Data Private
You can add titles, ratings, and more to songs and photos. But you want to share files, not your personal notes. Right-click a file, choose Properties, click the Details tab, and click the link at the bottom to "Remove Protection and Personal Information."

44. Search By Voice
Enable the built-in natural language search feature; it's on the Search tab in the Folder Options control panel. Now you can type, say, files created last month or music by Tom Lehrer.

45. Take a Meeting
Vista has a calendar that lets you share your schedule with others online. Type Calendar into the Start menu to launch it. Add a few appointments and click the Share menu and you're off!

46. Send Faxes
You may have a cable modem, but the odds are good that your PC has an integrated fax modem, too. Take advantage of it with Vista's built-in fax-center software.

47. Improve Compatibility
Stuck with an old program you love that just won't run in Vista? Search Help and Support for compatibility mode, and start the wizard to get that program going in the new OS.

48. Get a Digital Keyboard
Windows Vista comes with a virtual keyboard, handy if your real one breaks. Simply punch OSK into the Start menu's Search field and hit enter to bring up the on-screen keyboard and use your mouse to "key" in data.

Microsoft still feels that they need to get people to check for Vista compatibility in case they wish to upgrade from Windows XP."Through this new compatibility tool, Microsoft will work to solicit continuous feedback from consumers and partners to ensure that their purchase and adoption experience remains positive long after their migration to Windows Vista," the company said in a statement.

The idea was to offer a Web site where consumers and small businesses could easily check whether their hardware and software are Vista-ready. With Windows Vista has a handy tool which is called VSP1CLN.EXE, short for Vista Service Pack 1 Cleaner. The tool can be found in %SYSTEMROOT%\System32 and when run it makes Windows Vista Service Pack 1 permanent on your computer. In short that means that all files that are backed up during SP1 installation are removed and you will gain some gigabytes of disk space.

Deep inside Windows, there’s a secret Administrator account, and it’s different from the normal administrator account you most likely have set up on your PC.On Vista, the difference is more than the name: the Administrator account is not subject to User Account Control. So the Administrator can make any changes to the system and will see no UAC prompts.

For this reason, you may want to unlock the Administrator account, and use it only for those times when you want to make a series of system changes and don’t want to be bothered by UAC. True, you could instead simply disable UAC on your system, but it’s a pain to do this, and you may forget to turn it back on.

Turning on the Administrator account is straightforward.

You can unhide or turn on the Administrator account using the steps below:

Type cmd in the Search field on the Start menu. Right click the command prompt icon at the top of the Start menu and click Run as administrator.
Type ‘Net user administrator /active:yes’.

Once you complete these steps, the Administrator account will appear on the Welcome screen. To disable once again hide the account, repeat step 1 described above and type ‘Net user administrator /active:no’.

4 Ways To Shutdown/Restart The System At A Specific Time In Windows

If you are a network administrator of a company and the company policy enforces that all the systems should be shutdown before leaving. It’s always a headache to go to each and every system to see whether it has been turned off properly or somebody has forgotten to turn off. And even sometimes we need to shutdown our systems after specific amount of time or on a specific time. First of all I’ll tell you how to shutdown a system after a certain amount of time.

Shutdown After A Specific Interval of Time:

If you want to shutdown the system after half an hour go to command prompt and issue the following command:

shutdown -t 1800

Where 1800 is the no. of seconds the system should wait before shutting down. In this case, the system will wait for 1800 seconds.

If you are not comfortable with the command line, then go to Start –> Run –> shutdown -i

This will bring you the Graphical interface where you can configure when to shutdown the system.

Shutdown At A Specific Time:

1- Through Command Prompt

Issue the following command to schedule your tasks via command prompt

at 00:00 cmd /c shutdown -t 30

This command will be executed at 12AM and display a warning that the system is shutting down after 30 seconds. After 30 seconds, the system will shutdown.

2- Through Scheduled Tasks GUI

If you are not comfortable with the command line, then you can simply go to the scheduled tasks ( Start –> All Programs –> Accessories –> System Tools –> Scheduled Tasks) and schedule the system to shutdown automatically at the specified time.

3 Ways To Know The System Information In Windows

There are a lot of ways to check the system information in Windows. One of the most common and most basic is to right click My Computer and go to properties. It will show you the basic information about the system.

If we need to know a bit of detailed system about our system, the following methods can be helpful.

Method# 1: Through MSINFO tool

Msinfo is a tool provided by Microsoft which gives you quite a detail about your system. To run this tool, go to Start –> Run –> msinfo32

This will open up a window which show you a lot of details about your system.

Method# 2: Windows Help And Support

Interestingly enough, Windows Help And Support gives a very good organized information about the system. Actually I prefer to use this method most of the time where applicable. To find the system information, go to Start –> Windows Help And Support.

Under Pick A Task, select “Use Tools to view your computer information and diagnose problems”

From the left hand pane “Tools”, select My Computer Information.

Now from the right hand pane you can select different types of information that you can get. For Example, you can see the general information about the computer or you can have a look at the hardware installed etc. This is quite a lot of information but is organized nicely.

Method# 3: Command Prompt

The easiest and fastest method of all is to use the command prompt. Just open the command prompt (Start –> Run –> cmd) and type in systeminfo. This will give most common information which we need about our system.

Trick1:

An Indian discovered that nobody can create a folder with the name CON in Windows.. At Microsoft the whole Team couldn’t answer why this happened! Try yourself now. Try to create a new folder and rename it as “CON”. It will not accept the name and the previous name will appear again.

I tried to create the folder through DOS prompt and it gave me an error that the directory name is invalid.

After researching a bit, I have found out that CON is the name of a device. You can check it’s status as show in the picture below:

For those of you using Windows, do the following:

Open an empty notepad file
Type the following sentence

Bush hid the facts

Save it anywhere.
Close it and open it again.

So what did you see?

Searching Tips for Windows Users

If you want to search for multiple files at a time in the search window you can use the keyword
filename1;filename2;filename3
For example if you wanted to search kaspersky and mundu type
kaspersky;mundu

By the usage of wildcards you can improve the results of your search. Here are some details about it.

Use the asterisk (*) as a substitute for zero or more characters. If you are looking for a file that you know starts with “gloss” but you cannot remember the rest of the file name, type the following:
gloss*
This locates all files of any file type that begin with “gloss” including Glossary.txt, Glossary.doc, and Glossy.doc. To narrow the search to a specific type of file, type:
gloss*.doc
This locates all files that begin with “gloss” but have the file name extension .doc, such as Glossary.doc and Glossy.doc.
Another Example
To search for all file which include (letter) in their name, Use *letter.* as search keyword For example it can find Holiday letter.doc, Special letter.doc, and Special letter.txt with this keyword.

Use the question mark (?) as a substitute for a single character in a name. For example, if you type gloss?.doc, you will locate the file Glossy.doc or Gloss1.doc but not Glossary.doc.

A Few Words About Color
Computers recognized many different color formats. Some common choices include:
RGB color — lists a value between 0 and 255 for each of the Red, Green, Blue components of a color. (0, 0, 0), the absence of color, is completely black. (255, 255, 255), the presence of all colors, is completely white. Most Photoshop artists work in RGB.
CMYK color —lists a percentage of each of the colors (Cyan, Magenta, Yellow, blacK).
CMYK can best be thought of as the “color printer cartridge colors.” Some graphics designers choose to convert their work (after it has been done in RGB) to CMYK so that they have a better sense of how it’s going to look after it is printed.
Grayscale —this is exactly what it sounds like. It’s a color mode that operates entirely in black and white. Usually in order to convert an image to grayscale, you will first need to flatten it. (More about this later)
Bitmap —Only allows for black and white dots (pixels); I wouldn’t recommend using this in most cases
Lab color — Represents color with 3 components: (Lightness, color value from red to green, color value from blue to yellow). This is another non-standard color channel.

Removing Autorun.inf Virus & Viruses that uses Autorun.INF

Introduction

AUTORUN.INF Viruses are virus that uses the Autorun feature of Windows to spread itself on computers. This virus makes a copy of the autorun.inf file to the root or main directory of all the drives on your PC, internal and / or external disks, to make the virus runs every time the external disks like pendrives or USB drives were inserted or every time you double-click the drives through the Windows Explorer.

A lot of this infections were found on Bolivia,Viet Nam, Ecuador, Pakistan, Philippines, India, Indonesia, Malaysia, Colombia and Mexico (this list of countries were based on the Google Trends results for the AUTORUN.INF VIRUS keyword search: http://www.google.com/trends?q=autorun.inf+virus). Based on the same source, late of 2007 was the peak of this kind of computer virus infections but it also shows that in year 2008 the autorun.inf virus are still prevalent and keep on spreading. That’s why I decided to write an article about this autorun.inf virus.

Known virus variants of this kind are the YahLover (which uses scvhost.exe and killer.exe), Bacalid (which uses ctfmon.exe), IMGKULOT and FAIZAL.JS virus.

Prevention of Autorun.INF Virus

I still believe that prevention is better than cure so I have prepared here several points on how to prevent this kind of infection.

1. First method is you can disable the AUTORUN feature of Windows by applying a registry modification on the Windows’ Registry Editor. To do this:

Download: DISABLE-AUTORUN.REG and save this file on your computer.
After downloading the file, open the folder where you download it and double-click the file. You will be confirmed by Registry Editor if you want to proceed, just click Yes button to continue. (If a different message was seen such as “Registry Editing has been disabled by your administrator.”, possibly your PC is infected already by a virus that prevents registry access. To correct this read the section on Removing Autorun.INF virus.)
Restart your computer to apply these changes.

2. Another method is to create an AUTORUN.INF folder on the root directories (main directory usually represented by backslash symbol \ ) . You can do this via Windows Explorer or Command Prompt but I will recommend the method via Command Prompt.

To run command prompt, click Start then Run or press the key combination: Winkey + R
Type CMD then press enter. This will open the black and white environment.
On the prompt, type MD C:\AUTORUN.INF then press enter key.
Repeat this procedure to other hard drives and USB drives. Just replace the C letter from the command with the appropriate drive letter of each storage device.
If this fails, maybe your computer is infected already by the virus so read the next section for the solution of this problem.

Removing AUTORUN.INF virus manually

Manual removal procedure of the autorun.inf virus will vary depending on the attachment of the virus on the system. Actually this kind of infection is very easy to remove. Simple DOS commands can easily remove this kind of infection.

The following are just generic instructions and some of the steps might not be applicable to some virus infections that uses autorun.inf.

1. First, boot your system in Safe Mode Command Prompt Only. This can be done by restarting your computer and pressing F8 before the Windows Logo displays. It is important that you start the computer in this mode because all start-up programs are not started on this mode.

2. When you see the black and white environment, type the following commands (commands in BOLD). This commands will be used for analysis of the infection only:

CD \ - This change the current folder to the main directory of drive C
DIR /AH - Displays all files that are hidden. Usually virus hides their files by changing its attributes to Hidden and System attributes. If you find a file: AUTORUN.INF, it confirms the infection of the virus.
TYPE AUTORUN.INF - This shows the content of the file autorun.inf. From the picture below you will see that the name of the virus is SAMPLE-VIRUS.EXE, which the name will usually comes with the line Open or Explore or Shell line of the autorun.inf. This shows that the virus carrier is the file SAMPLE-VIRUS.EXE

Command Prompt window after dir/ah and type autorun.inf

3. To remove the infection based on the analysis above type the following command:

ATTRIB -H -R -S C:\AUTORUN.INF - unhides the hidden file autorun.inf
DEL C:\AUTORUN.INF
Repeat this step to other drives by replacing C:\ with other letters

4. To make sure that the carrier will not run during start-up, you need to make sure that it is disabled. Do this using the MSCONFIG tool of windows.

On the same Safemode Command Prompt Mode, type MSCONFIG
This will run the System Configuration Utility.
As shown below, uncheck the suspected file. This will disable it from start-up and will not run again. To see other places where programs were place to run on start-up, see my previous posts: How to Determine the Windows Startup Programs?

Note: This manual removal is only recommended when your installed anti-virus is not working due to the said autorun.inf virus infection. My advice is that when the virus is already removed manually, try reinstalling or installing an antivirus and update your virus definition file and scan your system to ensure a virus-free PC.

Engine test
The engine test verifies that the print engine is functioning correctly. This test is very useful for isolating printer problems, because it does not involve the formatter. Because the engine test prints a full page of lines across the entire printable area, it is also useful for checking and adjusting registration. This paper examines an open source mobile phone platform Android. It explains its’ advantages and disadvantages, the basic features and the market strategy. I review the adaptation of this new technology from the view of prospective mobile software developers, customers and manufacturers.

The purpose of this report is to present to the user the new and promising mobile platform based on the Linux operating system and provided by Google. Additionally, I introduce Open Source infrastructure which not only supports development, but also has the potential to become a main business activity in the future.

Firstly, I would like to mention a small company Android Inc. based on the software development for mobile phones, which was acquired by Google for unknown amount of money on July 2005. As the experienced team started to work hardly in Google Campus, it was a first serious sign about Google entering mobile phone market. In 2007, the Open Handset Alliance (OHA) was created to develop open standards for mobile devices. It consisted of 34 grand members, such as Google itself, NVIDIA, Intel, Motorola, T- Mobile and other mobile operators, handset manufacturers, software and other companies. As OHA stands for open mobile platform, a great race has started between OHA and main competitors Apple, Microsoft, Symbian and others. Microsoft launched Windows Mobile 6.0 version with full updated Office Mobile and other features. Symbian with over 110 million smartphones released OSv.9.5, and Apple stroked market with iPhone. The entire world was waiting for the response from Google with visionary Gphone, a single mobile device which could compete with iPhone and other mobile phones. OHA came with better solution – Google Android – first truly open mobile phone platform based on Linux, with clear and simple user interface and applications, created in Java. This strategy, which is about to declare not a single Gphone, but to put Android into existing and new mobiles devices and to make thousands of Gphones, gives mobile operators and device manufacturers significant freedom and flexibility to design products. As Google Android will be truly released in 2008 with its source code, at this moment Google announced Android SDK together with competition, which provides 10 million dollars in awards for Android developers. This idea seems to be quit clear and logical, in order to speed up and boost Java developers, but actually the contest slowed down the knowledge integration. The contest has effectively caused developers not to share their code to others. Therefore, I found a lack of answering to questions and other support on Android groups over the internet. In windows Vista, the TCP autotuning feature is enabled by default. Some web servers do not respond properly to this feature, so it appears that some sites open with very slow speed.

To use this feature, you will need to be logged into your computer with administrative rights.

First click on Start button and type CMD in Run option then press Enter.

At Command Prompt, type the following command and press enter.

netsh interface tcp set global autotuninglevel= disabled

This command will disable the TCP autotuning feature. Now close the command Prompt and restart your computer after any changes to go into effect.

You can easily restore these setting by typing the following command at Command Prompt.

netsh interface tcp set global autotuninglevel= normal
Now close the command Prompt and again restart your computer after any changes to go into effect.

Monkeys have good colour vision, and howler monkeys use it to select non-toxic leaves to eat. Attenborough travels through the African jungle with an alliance of species: several types of monkey and even mongooses combine to watch out for danger. They have a different alarm call for each enemy and Attenborough demonstrates this by placing a stuffed leopard nearby. In Sri Lanka, the naturalist also spends time with a troop of toque macaques — one of the most studied groups of monkeys in the world. It has been discovered that the creatures are born into a class system, in which position brings privileges. When the world’s climate changed 10 million years ago, some monkeys ventured into open grassland, and they are illustrated by some of the most resourceful: baboons and geladas.

Microsoft Makes Anti-Piracy Changes to Windows XP

Microsoft late Tuesday made changes to its Windows Genuine Advantage (WGA) Notifications anti-piracy service in Windows XP, a change that should begin appearing on users' desktops over the next few months. The company says it made the changes in order to align the WGA Notifications experience in XP with that of Windows Vista, but the new XP version actually adds an additional twist that's not present in Vista.

"Helping customers identify and buy genuine copies of Windows and avoid pirated software are top priorities for Microsoft," a representative of the software giant told me. "Microsoft is making these changes to simplify the installation process--making it easy for customers to stay up-to-date--to increase the effectiveness of these notifications, and to align experiences across Windows XP and Windows Vista."

WGA Notifications is responsible for alerting users when the copy of Windows they're using does not pass an internal test to determine whether it is genuine or potentially pirated. These alerts have taken different forms over the years. In Windows Vista, WGA Notifications originally moved the system into a reduced functionality mode that allowed only access to Internet Explorer, and then for only one hour at a time. But beginning with Service Pack 1 (SP1), Microsoft changed WGA Notifications in that OS so that the system would be fully functional but include regular, nagging notification messages but the status of the install. This technology also delays logon and changes the desktop background to solid black once an hour.

With this week's changes on XP, Microsoft says it is making the WGA Notifications experience more similar to that in Vista with SP1. That is, the system will still be fully functional when found to be non-genuine, but will feature the delayed logon, hourly notifications, and change the desktop to black on a regular basis.

But there are some differences. First, the new WGA Notifications experience will occur only on versions of XP that are based on XP Professional, including XP Professional, XP Media Center Edition, and XP Tablet PC Edition. These are the XP versions that are "most often stolen," Microsoft says, and over time the company will target just XP Pro, because the other two versions are now much less common. XP Home, which is still being sold with new Netbooks, is not affected by this change apparently.

Second, Microsoft is also painting a non-removable and non-interactive watermark to the bottom right corner of the XP desktop when the system is found to be non-genuine. This watermark displays the WGA logo and the text, "You may be a victim of software counterfeiting. This copy of Windows did not pass genuine Windows validation." In Windows Vista, WGA Notifications does occasionally pop-up dialog boxes with this information, but no desktop watermark appears.

The biggest change with this revision, perhaps, concerns the way WGA Notifications is installed. Microsoft is changing the XP end user license agreement (EULA) to state that WGA Notifications will be automatically-updated via Windows Update going forward. So many users will not necessarily be aware when future updates to the technology are applied. On the other hand, this change also means that legitimate customers will have fewer interactions with the anti-piracy technology, which is probably a good thing.

Also of note is the fact that Microsoft is making such unprecedented changes to XP at all. The company originally released the OS seven long years ago and released is successor, Windows Vista, a full two years ago. This year, Microsoft has made two major changes to the core XP OS, first with Service Pack 3 (which changed the Setup process, among other things) and now with WGA Notifications. Microsoft has never made such sweeping changes to an OS so late in its lifecycle.
